A number of unhappy shoppers have accused stores of “ruining Christmas” after deliveries were cancelled at the last moment or items substituted with bizarre alternatives.
Several customers are relying on delivery orders for their festive foods as they avoid busy supermarkets.
One customer who will have to make a few explanations to his family found his two nine-month matured luxury Christmas pudding from Asda was swapped - for six mince pies.
Although festive, the treats are probably not what people are expecting when they finish their turkey.
The shopper wrote: “Asda ye taking the mick here mate.”
Meanwhile a Sainsbury’s shopper celebrated “winning at Christmas” when her food shop arrived - complete with a single brussel sprout worth 4p.
That person can feel relieved however as at least they have some of their order.
Another had their entire order cancelled despite making it more than a month ago.
Sharing a snapshot of an email from Asda, which said it was “really sorry” it had to cancel, the fuming customer wrote: “Booked Christmas grocery delivery slot weeks ago.
“Asda cancels it two hours before delivering. Can’t get through to customer services or the store and I can;t get to the shops now.
“Merry Christmas Asda.”
A Tesco shopper was angered when he was told his parsnips and potatoes were out of stock and substitutions could not be made.
Another Asda shopper fumed at the chain when it swapped his non-alcoholic drinks for alcoholic beverages.
The chain inexplicably swapped another’s stuffing destined for the turkey for a tuna pasta bake.
A spokesperson for Asda said: “We will deliver more than one million Christmas orders this week across the UK and whilst we always try to make sure every delivery is perfect, delays or missing items can occasionally affect a small number of orders.
“We are picking up with those customers who are affected to try and find a solution as soon as possible.”
A Tesco Spokesperson added: "We have excellent availability and we are pulling out all the stops to make sure our customers have a great Christmas.
"We have plenty of festive products in stock and, on the extremely rare occasions where something from an online order is unavailable, we will always look for a suitable substitute."
It comes as Asda shoppers were handed free cash from the supermarket as a surprise gift ahead of Christmas.
Hundreds of thousands of customers received the money under the retailer 's loyalty programme.
Customers who sign up to the scheme can earn vouchers, giving them money off their food bill.
Rewards are put into a cash pot within their account before being applied.
