Onimusha: Way of the Sword hits 1 million copies sold in 24 hours

It’s been a good year for Capcom, and now it’s getting even better. The Onimusha franchise finally resurfaced last week, with Capcom confirming that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over 1 million copies its first full day on sale. That single-day haul pushed cumulative sales across all Onimusha games worldwide past 10 million units. It’s a remarkable franchise milestone considering the series has been pretty much silent for 20 years, and it also means it reached a million copies faster than Pragmata, which got there after 2 days. Capcom clearly has the magic touch. They left a franchise untouched for decades and fans will still lapped it up as soon as they clicked their fingers with a new release.

The game launched on Sept. 4 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Capcom prepared the release with an early-access demo campaign that let players try the game before it went live, with critics suggesting the strategy contributed to such a strong opening. Critics responded positively as well, with the title landing a score of 85 on Metacritic and 86 on OpenCritic within days of release.

What the launch means for the franchise

Way of the Sword is the first new entry in the Onimusha series in more than two decades. Set in early Edo-period Kyoto, it casts players as Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary swordsman based on a real samurai equipped with the Oni Gauntlet. Sword-fighting takes place against literal demons from Hell, with Capcom combining classic combat framework with sleek, modern visuals. Players can expect epic battles, feudal Japanese landscapes (although the English accents for the Western versions don’t really land), and a story that pits them against dark, demonic forces hellbent on invading your city.

To celebrate the 1 million milestone, Capcom shared a special illustration featuring Miyamoto Musashi alongside a smiling Komainu. In its statement, the publisher said, "We are truly delighted that so many people are playing Onimusha," adding, "We deeply appreciate all player feedback as well as video posts." The company closed with a direct appeal to its new audience: "Please continue to support 'Onimusha: Way of the Sword' in the future."

Director Satoru Nihei had set the tone ahead of launch. "I am truly happy to finally present a title that we have been developing for a long time," Nihei said. "I hope players dive into the unique world of Onimusha and experience its meticulously refined action."

Why this opening stands out

Why this opening stands out
The long-dormant franchise has had no problem finding new fans

One million units on day one is staggering for a revived franchise that had been collecting dust for 20 years. It also demonstrates that the market for single-player, story-driven action games with historical settings is as strong as ever (perhaps don’t leave it 20 years next time, guys!). Indeed, the Onimusha series’ reputation was cemented during the now-distant, bygone PS2 era, with millions of copies selling across early entries back in the day. However, it’s been so quiet for so long that a new audience needed to be won over. The demo campaign clearly helped, giving players a no-cost entry point.

The 85 to 86 critical score range puts the game solidly in the top tier of 2026 action releases. Strong reviews will also help to sustain word-of-mouth purchases in the weeks after launch, the period where many single-player titles traditionally see their steepest decline in sales. Capcom, though, has been here before, reviving dormant IPs and putting them back on the map. Way of the Sword is already on such an upward trajectory that we’d be amazed not to see more Onimusha games in the near future, even if Capcom has not made any announcements on future installments.

Capcom has not confirmed any additional content roadmap for Onimusha: Way of the Sword at this stage. More details on post-launch support are expected as the title continues its commercial run in the weeks ahead.
