Capcom's free Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo introduces the game's core combat systems through the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage. Players can test Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni powers and soul absorption while facing enemies and rival swordsman Sasaki Ganryu.
The demo initially offered approximately 30 minutes of the opening story. An August 25 update expanded the playable areas and added Daidara, a massive boss who can consume souls left on the battlefield.
The update also added a save data bonus. Players who complete the demo can unlock the "Kubi Akari" Charm in the full game and receive a boost to Musashi's stats. However, progress itself does not carry over.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store.
Essential Combat Controls
PlayStation's hands-on report highlights three important defensive actions: dodging, parrying and deflecting.
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Dodge | Circle |
| Parry | L1 |
| Deflect | Hold L1 and press X |
Each action has a different input and timing requirement. Learning when to dodge, parry or deflect is more important than attacking continuously.
How Parry Works
Parry is performed by pressing L1 as an enemy attack connects. A successful parry can create an opening for a counterattack.
Capcom describes the combat system as being built around tactical blade-to-blade encounters. Parry is therefore most useful when players can read an enemy's attack and respond at the correct moment.
New players should spend time watching enemy movements before trying to attack. Rushing into every encounter can make it harder to recognize attack patterns.
Parry and Deflect Differences
Parry and Deflect are separate techniques.
Parry — L1: A precisely timed defensive action that can interrupt an incoming strike and leave an enemy vulnerable.
Deflect — Hold L1 + X: A separate maneuver used to turn aside an incoming attack.
Both techniques are important during difficult encounters. Some attacks are easier to handle by deflecting, while others create better openings when parried. The best approach depends on the enemy and the timing of the attack.
Dodge to Charge the Reflex Combo
Dodging can also support Musashi's offense.
Capcom says that repeatedly dodging enemy attacks fills the Reflex Dodge gauge, shown as a red square at the bottom-right of the screen. Once the gauge is full, players can activate a powerful Reflex Combo.
The basic pattern is simple:
Dodge attacks → fill the gauge → activate Reflex Combo.
This gives players an alternative to parrying. Those still learning defensive timing can use movement to avoid damage while charging an offensive ability.
Issen and Break Issen
Issen is one of the signature techniques in the Onimusha series and is available in the demo.
The game also introduces Break Issen. Director Satoru Nihei explained that players can trigger it after completely depleting an enemy's Stamina Gauge.
Traditional Issen attacks require highly precise timing. Break Issen offers another route by rewarding players who pressure an enemy and gradually exhaust its stamina.
The system works alongside Dynamic Dismemberment, which allows Musashi's sword strikes to cut enemies according to the direction and angle of each attack.
Oni Strength and Oni Agility
Oni Strength is Musashi's power-focused Oni ability. It can break through enemy defenses and help destroy obstacles during exploration.
Oni Agility provides a movement-based ability. Among other uses, it allows Musashi to run across certain walls and reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible.
These powers are not limited to combat. The temple stage includes side paths containing enemies, crafting materials and other items that can strengthen Musashi.
How Soul Absorption Works
Defeated enemies release souls that Musashi can absorb through the Oni Gauntlet.
Souls can be used alongside discovered treasures to upgrade equipment and unlock new abilities. Players should therefore make soul absorption part of their normal combat routine.
The Daidara encounter adds an additional danger. Souls left floating in the area can be consumed by the boss, reducing the resources available to Musashi.
What the Daidara Update Adds
The August 25 update added Daidara to the Oni Refuge, a strange dimension Musashi enters after the duel with Ganryu.
The Oni Refuge features floating islands and unusual gravity. Daidara's ability to consume unabsorbed souls forces players to decide when to attack and when to collect resources.
The updated demo is available through the PlayStation Store.
