A 16-YEAR-OLD boy has been arrested and charged after this week’s “distressing” disorder in Dundee.
On Monday night, youths in the city’s Kirkton area were filmed lighting fires on roads, blocking their access, and forcing cars to take different routes.
Footage appeared to show wheelie bins on fire and flames filling the streets. Police in riot gear were called out from around 5.30pm.
The city’s council leader said the scenes were like something from a “war-torn nation”, while the Justice Secretary said the footage was “appalling and unwholly unacceptable”.
One male has now been arrested and charged, while another, also 16, will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with mobbing and rioting offences.
The male who has been charged will appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday, while the second boy will appear at a later date.
Police Scotland said there are now regular patrols of the area, and enquiries are ongoing.
Chief Superintendent Phil Davison, local policing commander for Tayside Division, said: “We know how distressing the disorder seen in Kirkton on Monday evening was for the local community.
"I want to reassure people that we are continuing to investigate a number of crimes committed during the evening and I fully expect others to be identified and charged as this work progresses.
“We have provided a highly visible police presence in the Kirkton area to provide a level of reassurance to local residents and this will continue in the coming days and into the weekend.
“I want to commend the local community for the resilience they have shown following this hugely disruptive and upsetting incident.
“We are fully committed to keeping people safe in the area and I would urge anyone with any information about the incident which has not yet been passed to police to call 101 or speak to any of our officers.”
Chief Superintendent Davison added: "We would appeal to anyone with any information to use the portal link or contact 101.
"Anyone with any CCTV, dashcam or any other footage that they think would assist our enquiries can also send this via this link."
