One taken to hospital after two-vehicle crash on A182 at Shiney Row near Houghton le Spring

One person was taken to hospital after a two-vehicle crash during rush hour.

The collision took place on the A182 at Shiney Row, in Houghton-le-Spring, on Tuesday morning. The police said no-one was believed to have been seriously injured.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 8.15am, we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A182 at Shiney Row. Emergency services are in attendance and no-one involved in the collision is believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries. A section of the road has been closed to allow for recovery of the vehicles."

The North East Ambulance Service sent a crew to the scene and a patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. A NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 8.34am to a road traffic accident on the A183 Washington Highway. We sent one emergency ambulance and transported one patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

Firefighters also arrived in the area soon after the collision. A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm we received a call about a two vehicle collision on the A182 in Houghton le Spring just after 8.30am.

"Two appliances, one from Rainton Bridge and one from Farringdon Community Fire Stations, were on the scene in a matter of minutes as it was believed someone was trapped in a vehicle.

"Upon arrival it became clear the person initially believe to be trapped was free and receiving treatment. Our crews left the scene at 8:56am."
