One punch killer Jacob Dunne tells how victim's parents helped him turn his life around

Most days, Jacob Dunne walks through Old Market Square to get the bus to work. 11 years ago, outside what was then Yates' Wine Lodge and is now Slug and Lettuce, he had approached a man called James Hodgkinson and delivered a punch that would kill the 28-year-old - a complete stranger he had never met before.

That senseless attack ended the life of an innocent man but it also changed Mr Dunne's life forever. The 19-year-old handed himself into Bridewell Police Station after he had found out that his victim had died nine days after the fateful night out in July 2011. What followed was a 30-month prison sentence for manslaughter and a misplaced quest for revenge on a friend that 'snitched' on him, which eventually led to education, an unlikely friendship with James' mum and dad, most recently, a book about his life and what happened.

Mr Dunne, originally from The Meadows but now living in Mapperley, had a difficult childhood way before the events of that night unfolded - he had drifted into drug-related gang culture, was drinking heavily and taking drugs as well as fighting for fun.
