One person has been taken to hospital following a rush hour crash in Sunderland.
Major traffic delays were caused on Tuesday afternoon following a collision on a stretch of the A19 southbound. Traffic queues stretched for up to five miles, with heavy congestion backing up to the Boldon Colliery exit.
Two lanes were closed closed on the major route from the A1231 Sunderland Highway to the A183 Chester Road following the accident, which happened at around 3.30pm. Motorists were facing delays as long as 50 minutes.

Following the crash, which was attended by the emergency services, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that one person was transported to hospital.
A spokesperson for NEAS said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19 in the Sunderland area shortly after 3.30pm this afternoon. We dispatched a rapid response paramedic and one ambulance crew, and have taken one patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment."
Around two hours on from the accident, traffic was still moving slowly on the road. Lanes two and three (of three) were closed, near to the A1231 exit. The road was finally cleared shortly before 7pm and all lanes were reopened.
