Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man at a mental health facility in Geelong, with another patient currently under police guard.
At about 2am on Monday, February 23, emergency services reported to Barwon Health Swanston Centre, located on the corner of Myers and Swanston Street.
Upon arrival, authorities found the body of a man inside a room at the facility. Following the discovery, a man, who is also a patient, was taken under police guard.
Victoria Police say the pair were known to each other, and the deceased has yet to be formally identified.

Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas described the incident as “very distressing” and confirmed that a crime scene has since been established at the facility.
“Well, obviously what happened is very distressing, but it is an active police investigation and I’m not going to cut across that,” she said, per the Geelong Advertiser.
“A crime scene has been established and it’s important that police are able to get on and do their job.”
According to the publication, the Swanston Centre is preparing for a committal court hearing in March following the suicide of a patient at the facility in 2022. WorkSafe Victoria is also investigating the death of a woman at the centre in June 2024.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, with footage or further information, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
