Who Was Marie-Thérèse Walter
Marie-Thérèse Walter played a major role in Pablo Picasso's artistic life.
Picasso met Walter on the streets of Paris in 1927 when she was still a teenager and he was 45 years old. According to Walter's own recollections, Picasso invited her to his studio shortly after they met, and she eventually became both his muse and lover while he was still married to ballerina Olga Khokhlova, as reported by Smithsonian Magazine.
Walter inspired some of Picasso's most famous works during the 1930s, including Femme à la montre, The Dream (Le Rêve), and Nude in a Black Armchair (Nu au fauteuil noir).
How the Painting Ended Up in the House
Four people were arrested in connection with the drug trafficking investigation.
According to court testimony, one suspect admitted to stealing the painting from a storage facility in Paris where he had worked as a security guard, as per the Smithsonian Magazine report.
Police reportedly described the theft as "opportunistic," suggesting that “it often happens in such cases, the gang had no idea what to do with it,” as quoted in the report.
