One of my favorite board games is getting a massive new expansion to kick off 2026

A brand-new Wingspan expansion is kicking off 2026, and it's a serious shakeup.

Wingspan Americas Expansion is the fourth add-on to the popular board game, and it'll be up for purchase on the publisher store this January 21. (Shipping will take place in February, followed by a wider retail launch from March 2026.) This pack includes well over 100 new bird cards, many of which are hummingbird 'mini' cards. If you're a Wingspan veteran – which many of us seem to be, considering how often it's included on lists of the best board games – these will significantly alter gameplay. That's because they travel between player boards and a new, central 'garden' board.

If you've not tried the original Wingspan yet, you can pick it up for a discount these days - as an example, it's currently $55 at Amazon instead of the usual $65.

I've been digging into the rulebook, and this isn't a novelty; it'll change how you approach the game, which is perfect if you're getting a little fed up with standard Wingspan. Basically, hummingbirds dart from the shared garden board to your personal board (so long as there's space for them) or back back on your turn. This provides added benefits, and you'll want to do so because attracting each of the five hummingbird 'types' advances you along a new score tracker. The more kinds of hummingbird you can attract, the more points you'll earn.

As noted in our Wingspan review, the numerous paths to victory are some of the best things about the board game – and this introduces another layer. While it'll likely be too much for newcomers, it'll be a welcome addition for more experienced players.

There's no word on pricing yet, but I suspect it'll be in line with the other expansions – e.g. somewhere between $30 / £30 and $40 / £40.
