'One man wrecking ball' took teenage son with him to take part in Capitol riots

A rioter who helped assault a police officer in the January 6 Capitol Hill riots has been sentenced to seven years in jail with the judge describing him as a "one man wrecking ball"

Kyle Young was sentenced in the U.S. District Court in Washington after admitting to helping in the assault of a police officer during the now notorious riot.

He even took his 16-year-old son with him who took part in the fighting on the lower west terrace, including throwing a speaker which hit another rioter.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson noted the 17 months he's been held since his arrest which will likely be taken from his total sentence.

She described Yound as "a one-man wrecking ball," reports CNN.

The seven year sentence is one of the longest handed down for the riot which saw terrified politicians running for their lives.

It followed Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 Presidential Election, which he and his supporters incorrectly say was fradulent.

Since the violent riot, which left five people dead, around 900 people were charged with more than 400 already pleading guilty or being convicted.

In court Young cried as he apologised to the officer he helped assault, D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone.

To Fanone, Young said "I hope someday you forgive me".

Young told the judge that “whatever you give me as punishment I accept and I probably deserve.”

Fanone told the court how he was beaten and repeatedly shocked with a stun gun. Young admitted to handing a stun gun to another rioter who then turned it on Fanone.

Young also admitted to grabbing the officer's hand as he struggled to protect himself from the attacking mob.

Calling for a stricter sentencing in court, Fanone told Young, "What I hope you do with that time is, I hope you suffer".

Young, 38, of Redfield, Iowa, originally faced more than a dozen charges but entered a plea to the single charge of assault of an officer.
