It’s been over 20 years since Friends’ series finale aired, and still somehow that last episode — a two-parter appropriately titled “The Last One” — can bring on such a flood of emotions. Saying goodbye to Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe (and Mike?) still feels like such a loss after spending 10 seasons with the gang. That's especially true now, after learning one behind-the-scenes fact that makes that last line hit way different.
At the end of the episode, the core group of six somberly leave Monica’s apartment for the last time. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) asks if they have time to stop for a cup of coffee, and Chandler (Matthew Perry) smartly replies: “Where?” The joke is that we all know where — Central Perk, where the friend group spent so much time at that orange couch reserved for them. However, one viral meme adds a whole new layer of meaning to that final word:
Before, this was simply just one last funny line from Chandler Bing, but now I’m always going to see its double meaning — at that point during filming there actually was nowhere for them to go, because the Central Perk set had already been torn down.
Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman confirmed as much in the DVD commentary for “The Last One,” when she talked about the heartwrenching process of closing out a decade-long sitcom. Kauffman said:
It was probably the most emotional two weeks of any of our lives. When we did the first half, we shot out all the coffeehouse scenes, because we had to build the airport for the second half. The last scene in the coffeehouse, we almost didn’t get through.
During the final Central Perk scene, Marta Kaffuman said they had to stop several times because people were crying. Executive producer Kevin Bright said it wasn’t until David Schwimmer pointed out that it was the last time they’d be on the set together that the tears started to flow. Even after they wrapped the scene (and the set), nobody wanted to leave, Kauffman said:
We tore down the coffeehouse at the end of the night, and we ended up with an impromptu party, about 80 people — crew, cast, producers stayed, office staff — and we just watched it go down. It was like losing a little piece of yourself.
That’s heartbreaking enough to read as a fan, so I can only imagine what it was like for the cast and crew who’d spent 10 years of their lives there. Luckily for us, though, Central Perk will always exist via seemingly constant cable reruns and the ability to stream all 10 seasons — plus the 2021 reunion special — with an HBO Max subscription.
Still, even though I’m sure that line wasn’t written to be a secret reference to the Central Perk set, I’m afraid I’ll never be able to hear Chandler’s final line without thinking about it that way.
