One Lexington was formed in 2017 to coordinate city activities addressing violent crime, especially among young adults. Tuesday, Mayor Linda Gorton announced the winners of its inaugural round of grants. One Lexington Director Devine Carama said the $100,000 awarded will benefit 15 groups and agencies – and the people they serve.
“We have reentry programs that will be serving individuals coming home from incarceration. We have mentoring programs that work with youth directly impacted by gun violence and we have victim service organizations who support those lost to gun violence.”
Carama said another grant will help Radio Lex reach underserved communities.
“They have an English station, but they have a bilingual station as well. And so, they're going to be doing different promotional causes, do the radio station messaging, that speaks to reducing gun violence.”
Carama said the second round of grants, for fiscal year 2024, will be announced in May.
