Australian rules football legend Ron Barassi will be given a final farewell at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the site of his greatest sports achievements.
The 10-time Victorian Football League premiership winner as a player and coach died aged 87 on September 16, with his family later accepting the offer of a state memorial.
The 100,000-seat MCG has been locked in to host the service on November 10.
Family, friends and supporters are invited, while members of the public will be able to register to attend.
Premier Jacinta Allan said the event would be a celebration of Barassi's extraordinary life and his contribution to Australian football and the wider community.
"Ron Barassi was a sporting icon - player, coach and mentor - who reshaped the game and leaves behind an enormous legacy," she said in a statement on Thursday.
"He will be remembered for his leadership, honesty, integrity, humility, generosity and courage.
"We know Victorians are eager to celebrate this great man for his contribution to AFL and beyond, and there is no better venue to farewell a legend of the game than the MCG."
Barassi played 253 senior VFL games, including 204 for Melbourne and 49 for Carlton.
Between playing and coaching, he claimed 10 premierships at Melbourne, Carlton and North Melbourne.
On New Year's Day in 2009, Barassi went to the aid of a woman being attacked in the street by a group of men who then turned on the football legend, leaving him with serious head injuries.
He received a bravery award for his heroics in 2012.
The Australian Football League is still considering how to best honour Barassi, with renaming the premiership cup or medals among options canvassed.
