About 11.4% of adults 65 and older who used cannabis in the past year met criteria for cannabis use disorder, according to a University of California San Diego analysis published in the journal Addiction. That works out to roughly one in nine older cannabis users. Most of those cases were mild.
The finding matters for families because cannabis is no longer unusual among older adults. About 8.9% of people 65 and older reported using it in the past year, and many take several prescription medicines. Adult children and caregivers may be the first to notice when use starts to cause problems.
