One in 10 people are sleeping on a mattress that is up to 20 years old, research suggests. Hotel chain Travelodge said sleeping on old mattresses was detrimental to health and wellbeing.
A survey of 2,000 adults found that almost half have not made the link between poor sleep and the quality of their mattress. Two out of five respondents said their mattress is so uncomfortable they can feel the springs prodding through, and it also makes squeaking noises during the night.
More than one in four of those questioned said they would keep sleeping on their mattress until it actually fell apart. Shakila Ahmed of Travelodge said the research was “alarming”, adding: "Although we spend one third of our life sleeping, Britons don’t understand the importance of a good quality mattress and are jeopardising a good night’s sleep."
