One person was found to have been hurt in the incident with their injuries not thought to be serious, life-threatening injuries but NEAS crews did take the patient to Queen Elizabeth Hospital to be checked over.

The road remained closed for approximately an hour and a half in all and was cleared at around 4.30pm. Police crews left the scene at this time.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said at the time: “Shortly before 3pm today (Wednesday) police received a report of a collision involving two cars on the A1 Western Bypass northbound at Junction 68 Lobley Hill.
