One Big Picnic returns to Glasgow's George Square this weekend

One Big Picnic is back at George Square this weekend after a two-year hiatus.

The event gives Glaswegians the chance to try delicious free food served by people of diverse beliefs and cultures who run emergency food response groups, soup kitchens, and community food projects year-round.

Throughout the pandemic, these groups continued their service for the vulnerable, serving tasty meals with dignity to those who need it', with the belief everyone has the right to enjoy good food and feel part of one big community.

The free family-friendly day out takes place at George Square this Sunday September 4, from 12.30pm - 3pm, with organisers saying it will 'celebrate the diversity of the people of Glasgow.'

They add: "Stalls will be serving sweet and savoury food at no cost, creating an open-air community meal. Sharing quality food and chat is the order of the day!

There will also be music and entertainment (Handout)

"In addition, there will be music, dance, and martial arts performances, with fun for all the family such as henna painting and the ever-popular opportunity to try on a turban or hijab.

"Join us on George Square on Sunday the 4 th of September 2022 from 12:30 – 3pm and celebrate the glorious diversity of our city. Food will be limited (and delicious), so come early to avoid disappointment!"

Talking ahead of the event, Jasparit Kaur Kainth of SEVA Scotland, said: "One Big Picnic brings together food support services like ours from across the city. We get to work with people from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths – being able to meet, chat and learn from each other has been fantastic. We’re excited to be back again doing it this year!".

Interfaith Glasgow Board Member Sabah Aslam commented: "This year's One Big Picnic feels extra special as it marks our post-pandemic return to George Square … Glasgow is home to the biggest and most religiously diverse city in Scotland, and it makes me feel proud to be a part of Interfaith Glasgow, collaborating with the grassroots communities and groups across Glasgow to bring this initiative to life.

"I feel honoured to call this city my home, when people from all walks of life come together, it brings truth to the saying that ‘people make Glasgow'."

Mohammed Ramzan of the Vision Again Foundation also said: " It’s such a great day out for all the family. People can enjoy a delicious range of food from a variety of cultures, and kids can enjoy tasty snacks and activities like arts and crafts, henna painting, and trying on a hijab or turban!"
