One acre of agricultural land washed away in landslip in Idukki

Nearly one acre of agricultural land in Nedumkandam was washed away in a landslip following heavy rain in Idukki. According to officials, the landslip occurred around 1 a.m. at Pachady near Nedumkandam on Tuesday. The land is owned by Pachadi resident Chowelikudiyil Vinod. The landslip occurred from the Nedumkandam-Pachadi- Pathuvalavu road and resulted in washing away pepper and banana crop. A portion of the road to the area was also damaged.

Udumbanchola Tehsildar Jose A.V. said that the area experienced heavy rain from Monday evening onward and experienced extremely heavy rainfall over three hours during the night which resulted in the landslip. No casualty was reported. Nearly 25 families were advised to shift to Pachadi St Joseph Church parish hall, said the official.

 “If heavy rainfall continues it will result in more landslips and the families are advised to move to safer places as a precautionary measure,” said Mr. Jose. 

According to local natives, the bordering villages of Udumbanchola taluk experienced extremely heavy rainfall and lightning on Monday.

 Meanwhile, a father and son suffered serious injuries in lightning at Third Camp near Nedumkandam in Idukki on Monday night. The injured were identified as Moolasserill Sunil (44) and his son Sreenath (14). His wife and another child narrowly escaped in the incident. A portion of the house was also damaged. The injured were admitted to Theni Medical College in Tamil Nadu.
