Once again, deadly shootings have us asking, ‘What can be done to stop the violence?’

Yesenia Juarez, founder of Little Village Busy Bees and a mother to three girls, and her family stop by a memorial for 8-year-old Melissa Ortega during a vigil outside Fifth Third Bank at the intersection of West 26th Street and South Pulaski Road in the Little Village neighborhood, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2022. Sixteen-year-old Emilio Corripio was charged in the fatal shooting of Ortega, who was struck in the head while crossing the street on January 22 while Corripio was allegedly shooting at rival gang members, according to the police. “It’s really scary,” Juarez said. “I walk with the girls in the neighborhood all the time. And I started putting up yarn bombs for them you know to beautify our neighborhood and to show people that it’s not all bad here. … I hope it’s the last time this ever happens here.” | Pat Nabong/Sun-Times
