On team's insistence, Dhawal Kulkarni puts off retirement to season-end

MUMBAI: "One thing I didn't get was the India Test cap," said veteran pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who confirmed on Saturday that he will retire at the end of the season.

"MCA has requested that I stay (with the team) until the end of the tournament. As a senior player, they will require me in the knockouts as well. As and when I will be required to play, I will play besides mentoring the youngsters," said Kulkarni, who was supposed to retire after the last group game against Assam but was urged to stay on.

When asked about it, Kulkarni said. "It is the biggest decision of my life and there was a little bit of confusion in my mind whether to retire but then I thought that I shouldn't leave my team in the middle of the season and also MCA, selectors and the coach requested me to stay back and I accepted it. I felt somewhere that I have been part of MCA for 17 years and three games won't make a big difference. At this crucial stage of the tournament, I thought I should stay with the team and at the end of the season I will announce my retirement."

The 35-year-old played 95 First-Class matches and has taken 281 wickets at an average of 27.31. He has also played in 12 ODIs and two T20Is.
