On loan Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri tests positive for Covid amid transfer return links

On loan Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Italy international was not involved in Lyon's clash with Troyes on Sunday, raising further questions about his future in France.

However, Emerson has since confirmed that he was out of the game because he tested positive for Covid, but he and his family are doing well.

He wrote on his Instagram: "Hi everyone, just wanted to come here to say that I tested positive for Covid on Friday, and I truly feel fine and the rest of the family do too.

"Many thanks for all your caring messages. I hope to be back as soon as possible."

Nevertheless, his recent positive test is likely to reduce the window Chelsea have to bring him back to Stamford Bridge this January.

With Ben Chilwell out for the remainder of the season through injury, Thomas Tuchel is desperate to strengthen the left wing-back position.

Former Everton defender Lucas Digne was reported to be on the club's radar but an initial interest was not pursued any further as other more short-term options were preferred. The Frenchman has since signed for Aston Villa in a deal worth £25million.

However, recalling Emerson is another option but with no such clause in the agreement, a deal is proving tricky, with Lyon doing all they can to hold onto the Italian.

football.london understands that Chelsea have had a compensation offer in the region of £3million rejected by the Ligue 1 side already, and whether they improve on that remains to be seen.

The 27-year-old made 71 appearances for Chelsea following his move from Roma in January 2018 and was part of the squad that won the Champions League last term, scoring in the dying moments to wrap up their last-16 triumph against Atletico Madrid.

Other targets have been reported as well, including Ajax's Argentinian left-back Nicolas Tagliafico and Tuchel's former player, Layvin Kurzawa, but Emerson may be best suited to making an immediate impact at the club he is familiar with.
