Omar Abdullah becomes first Chief Minister of J&K as Union Territory

Srinagar: National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah took oath as the first Chief Minister of the Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir here in Srinagar on Wednesday. 

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).

J&K LG Manoj Sinha administered Omar Abdullah the oath of office and secrecy.

Omar has become the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two union territories —Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh— in August 2019.     

Samajwadi Party Supremo Akhilesh Yadav, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in LS Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among those dignitaries who attended the swearing-in ceremony.

NC won 42 seats in 90-Member  Assembly
The NC dominated the Assembly polls held in September-October, winning 42 seats while its alliance partners Congress and CPI(M) clinched six and one seats respectively. Later, NC received support from 4 Independent MLAs and one AAP MLA also.
