The Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan on Friday offered a bonanza of highlights: the lighting of a Leonardo da Vinci-inspired cauldron, athletes in eye-popping attire from top designers, Mariah Carey belting out high notes in Italian and much more.

One key thing it didn't provide: snow.
