Anyone who lives in the capital will know that it’s a notoriously rare occurrence for Londoners to engage with one another on their morning commute. But tube-goers will have been hard-pressed not to exchange some smiles with one another this week, when commuters were treated to a pretty unusual scene.
On Thursday morning, British champion skier and four-time Winter Oympian Chemmy Alcott was seen traversing the walkways of Waterloo Underground Station and the heights of TfL’s cable car, kitted-up in skis and full winter sports gear. The scenes marked the celebration of the inaugural London Snow Show, part of National Snow Week, taking place at the ExCeL from October 21 to 22.
One of the biggest snow sports events in the UK, the show will feature expert advice from the brightest stars in the country’s snow sports scene, as well as the opportunity for a community of enthusiasts to shop the latest cutting-edge kit — or even just book their next winter holiday.
“I am thrilled to be appearing at National Snow Week’s inaugural London Snow Show this year,” Alcott said. “The Snow Show has grown over the years and is now bigger and better than ever before and will be in the Capital for the first time. The slopes are more accessible than ever and this is the perfect place for both beginners and those already comfortable with snow sports."
Visitors will also be able to brush shoulders with some of the most famous faces in the UK snow sports scene, getting the latest tips and advice from leading experts, top celebrities, athletes and Olympians, including presenter and commentator Ed Leigh, Olympic curling champion Eve Muirhead, four-time Paralympic ski medallist Millie Knight, and Alcott herself.
Of course, there will also be an indoor slope for snow sports’ fans to get involved and learn new skills with the help of the most seasoned experts in the field. For those wishing to refine their skiing technique, a biomechanical screen will be available to analyse movement and address any problem areas.
There will also be the chance to browse the wares of hundreds snow sports’ brands, with visitors getting the opportunity to upgrade their gear with some of the hottest kit on the market.
“Now in its third year, National Snow Week has become a growing community of snow sports enthusiasts keen to discuss, try-out and enhance their own winter sports experience,” said Mike Seaman, CEO of Raccoon Media Group.
“There’s nothing quite like preparing for your next winter trip or competition, and we’re proud to announce the debut of The London Snow Show, allowing the UK’s largest city to get their hands on the latest equipment, snow attire and advice all in one place.”
