Olivia Rodrigo's living room embraces 'bookshelf wealth,' 2024's most eclectic design trend

Olivia rodrigo.

If you've been paying attention to interior design trends, chances are you've heard the term 'bookshelf wealth.' Though the look was around long before it was trending, it describes the practice of displaying a curated collection of objects and books proudly on the bookshelves in your space. It's the opposite of pared-back minimalism.

As final proof of the bookshelf wealth's virality,  the interior design trend is appearing in the home of one of the brightest beacons of Gen Z style: Olivia Rodrigo. The musician took to TikTok to share an old singing video, and we couldn't help but notice the fully stocked bookshelves in her living room.

The bookshelf wealth trend has been celebrated for its warm and lived-in feel. Interior designer Charmaine Wynter states: 'In this corner of Olivia Rodrigo's living room, a warm and inviting atmosphere is beautifully captured. The shelves are adorned with copious books, each tile representing diverse interests that ignite the imagination and reflect a lifetime love of reading.'

She continues, 'This living room celebrates a different kind of wealth, one that cannot be measured by vanity metrics often showcased in picture-perfect, everything in its place social media posts. It is a celebration of the wealth of knowledge, an invaluable treasure that can never be lost.'

The controversial bookshelf wealth trend has also been lauded for its celebration of individuality. Jennifer Ebert, digital editor at Homes & Gardens states, 'Bookshelf wealth fits into the increasing trend towards personalization in interior design. Rather than choosing a look from a list of trends, people are more interested in building a space that feels distinct to their personality.

Unsurprisingly, Olivia Rodrigo's version of bookshelf wealth has a decidedly Gen Z bent. It incorporates her love for purple with a ceramic vase as well as a verdant Chinese money plant and a large, shell-shaped vase. These small details turn the look from a classic bookshelf into an ode to Olivia's interests and style.
