Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta 's had a "glorious experience" reprising their Grease roles in 2019, with it now understood to have been their final in-character reunions, three years before Olivia's death.
It was part of Meet n' Grease sing-along events in Florida, which saw Olivia and John channel their respective roles as Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko from the popular 1971 film.
The rare Danny and Sandy appearance saw them attend sing-along events over three nights, initially at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach - where they dressed up for a screening and a Q&A with fans.
Olivia said, shortly after the events, that they had "a lot of fun" revisiting the iconic characters, with her further commenting at the time: "I couldn't stop laughing. It was just great."
Speaking to People in early 2020, she said: "That movie is still loved [...] The excitement from the people, it was amazing, I couldn't believe it, people they still love it!"
Olivia had also said on Instagram at the time that it was their "first time in costume" since making the film, but clarified in the interview that she didn't wear the exact same clothing.
John had told the outlet: "It was one of the highlights of our lives to see the joy of people unrequited love happening from 40 years of people waiting to be with us."
The experience took them to Tampa, following a date in West Palm Beach, with the final of the screenings held in Jacksonville and John later gushed over the crowds, saying they were "amazing."
He further commented a month after the events that it had been a "glorious experience" for them both, noting that the events had seen thousands of fans come together.
The sing-along events had seen cast members reunite for a screening of the film as well as a Q&A section, during which some of them did a "little singing" for the audience.
John added: "It was my idea. The key was we got to look like Sandy and Danny. [...] We're coming there as Sandy and Danny and then people will get a real kick out of it."
Olivia had attended wearing her character's signature yellow skirt and white blouse before changing into the edgier ensemble, including a black leather jacket and leggings, later on – an iconic look from the final scene of the movie.
John wore black trousers, a T-shirt and a leather jacket to resemble his role as Danny in Grease, which remains one of the most popular musical films released to date.
The sing-along events are understood to have been the last occasion that Olivia and John reunited in character, with it having been announced on Monday August 8 that she has passed away.
It wasn't the last time that Olivia and John were together though, with them having reunited at least once more at a fundraising event for G'Day USA held in early 2020.
Her husband John Easterling shared the sad news of her passing, with him saying that Olivia had passed away, aged 73, surrounded by family and friends at her ranch in California.
It's prompted an outpouring of tributes, with former co-star and friend John writing: "My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible."
He further commented: "I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!"
