Olivia Munn intelligently blends light and dark shades of wood in her living room – for a designer-approved, warm environment

Mixing and matching colors, patterns, and fabrics is one of the best ways to maintain visual interest in a space. This stands true for wood – perhaps one of the most-used materials in the home, which comes in an endless variety of colors and finishes.

For proof of how mixed woods can work well, look no further than Olivia Munn's living room. The X-Men: Apocalypse and The Predator star is a proponent of the mixed woods trend.

In a clip shared to her Instagram page, we can see that Munn's living room features a light wood gallery landing, a medium wood bookshelf unit and floors, and a dark wooden table.

According to experts, mixing woods is an ideal way to create depth and a layered appearance via contrast between light and dark woods. 'Mixing different types of wood in a room is a design trend that strikes a balance between warmth, texture, and sophistication,' begins designer Nina Lichtenstein.

'Far from being a design faux pas, blending various wood tones and grains can create depth and visual interest that feels both intentional and organic. When done thoughtfully, it adds richness to any space and highlights the beauty of each wood’s unique character.'

As far as particular pairings go, Lichtenstein has a few suggestions for mixing and matching woods.

'The dark, rich tones of walnut contrast beautifully with the lighter, golden hues of oak,' she states. 'Walnut’s bold presence grounds the room, while oak adds brightness and softness, making this pairing feel elegant yet approachable.'

Alternatively, she recommends going bold with some mahogany and pine.

'The deep, reddish-brown tones of mahogany juxtapose nicely with pine’s light, knotty appearance,' she says. 'This combination brings a rustic and refined quality to a space, ideal for blending formal and casual elements.'

Successfully mixing woods in a space comes down to a few different styling considerations.

'Pay attention to the undertones of different woods,' Lichtenstein says. 'Cool-toned woods (like ash or maple) work best with other cool-toned woods, while warm-toned woods (like oak or cherry) pair well together. Mixing cool and warm woods can work, but it should be done carefully to maintain balance.'

She continues, 'Mixing woods of similar shades can feel muddled. Instead, aim for contrast. For example, pairing a dark walnut table with light oak floors creates a striking balance. Allow each piece to stand out by keeping one wood as the dominant tone and others as accents.'

Below, we have sourced some mixed wood pieces that add dimension and texture to any living space.

We recommend limiting mixed woods to a maximum of four different varieties so as to keep a space feeling relatively cohesive.
