An Oldham pub has announced it will let children eat for free to ‘reverse the tide of inflation’, which has led to soaring food costs for millions of households. The White Hart Inn at Lydgate on Stockport Road announced the news via Facebook last week.
Children will now be able to eat for free from Monday to Thursday during ‘Family Hour’ from 5-6pm. The new offer means that a family of four can dine at the Oldham pub from £29, and pizzas are available from £7.50.
Taking to social media to announce the news, a post published by the team at The White Hart Inn read: “REVERSING the tide of inflation. From 12 September onwards with Monday to Thursday Family Hour children eat FREE, a family of four can dine from as little as £29 and pizza available from £7.50.”

The menu explains that for every main course from the brass monkey menu, one children’s meal with be free with dishes including Southern fried chicken nuggets with French fries and baked beans; pork sausages, mashed potatoes and baked beans or gravy; crispy haddock goujons, French fries and garden peas; and tomato and basil pasta with grated parmesan.
The news comes as inflation continues to drive up food prices and household bills. Last month grocery inflation hit a new record of 12.4%. Earlier this summer, Florence Coke of Mama Flo’s in Stockport began providing free lunches for children to help parents throughout the school holidays in absence of the free lunches they would be getting in school.
A number of Greater Manchester businesses have spoken about their fears aqs prices continue to climb, while some have had to shutter for good. Just last week, the National Federation of Fish Fryers said that in the wake of rocketing bills, the industry faced ‘extinction’. Already 66% of chip shops have reduced opening hours to save money and currently there are 35% tariffs on Russian white fish, due to the war in Ukraine.
Back in February, it was announced that the Saddleworth pub has been listed in the Michelin Guide. The long-running guide said: “Never one to stand still, this 18C stone pub on the moor is constantly evolving.
“It’s a busy place but the staff have it all under control and there are comfy bedrooms for those wishing to stay. Dining takes place in a large rear room; the appealing menu has a British heart and global influences.”
