Old Kent Road: Murder investigation launched as two arrested over fatal stabbing of man, 47

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death on the Old Kent Road early on Tuesday morning.

Police and the air ambulance were called to the stabbing on the major south London road in Bermondsey just after 7am and found a man with knife wounds.

Despite their efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later.

A man, 54, and woman, 38, have been arrested in connection with the case.

A murder investigation was launched, led by Detective Chief Inspector Mike Nolan of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.

DCI Mike Nolan, who is in charge of the inquiry, said: “Early indications are that the stabbing took place inside a residential address close to where the victim was found by members of the public.

“While we are keeping an open mind concerning motive, it does appear that those present at the address at the time of the stabbing were known to each other and that there is no wider threat to the public.”

In a statement, a Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers have arrested one man and one woman. They remain in custody at this time.

“A crime scene and cordons remain in place. Enquiries are underway to identify the victim and notify next of kin.”

A post-mortem is set to take place later.

A partial road closure is in place on the southbound lane, near to the overpass, as police respond to the incident.

Officers said in an appeal: "Anyone who witnessed this incident or has information but has not yet spoken to police should call 101 or Tweet on ‘X’ @MetCC quoting 891/9DEC.

“To remain 100% anonymous call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit Crimestoppers-uk.org.”

The stabbing is the latest tragic fatal knife crime incident in the capital after a young man was killed in a double stabbing at a train station in south-west London on Monday.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was found inside Strawberry Hill station, Twickenham around 11.50pm on Monday.

Six minutes later, a 16-year-old boy was discovered with a laceration to his leg in nearby Alexander Close.

A murder probe has been launched and four males, including the teenager, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
