Old Firm legends Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel team up for new music video

Scots singer songwriter Kenny Lee Roberts has brought the Old Firm together ahead of the big game this weekend - recruiting Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel for his new music video.

And for Gordon, the shoot was so much fun he reckons it’s the closest he has come to feeling like he did when scoring goals in front of full houses in his playing days – while Frank says he just struggled to get into a John Travolta-style white suit.

The tongue in cheek footage was shot in Glasgow’s Berkeley Suite and sees the stars poking fun at themselves while Kenny and his band perform song Giving it Travolta – about a deluded wannabe ladies man who can’t see the party is over.

Kenny said: “Giving It Travolta was so funny to shoot. We got a great venue booked out in Glasgow and enlisted the acting skills of Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel, who were both absolutely fantastic and great to work with.

“The guys really nailed but were more than happy not to take themselves too seriously, much like the rest of us.

“The promise of some free drinks also attracted some friends along on the night to be extras in the video, which turned out just as we hoped and I am sure people will really enjoy it.

“It’s on YouTube now so do have a look!”

The football stars themselves also loved their roles in the video – and are keen to join Kenny and the band at an upcoming charity show in Glasgow in May.

Frank said: “I’ll not turn up in the white suit that’s for sure. Yeah I’ll find out from the boys what’s happening and if I’m about I’ll certainly make an entrance.”

And Gordon said: “That would be brilliant, if I can possibly make that I’ll certainly be there. I would absolutely be up for that.

“Kenny has brilliant tunes, that’s my sort of music. I’m into that, I love all kinds of music believe it or not. It’s a good album and a good song.

“I really enjoyed the song, I’m not just saying that, and I really enjoyed being part of the video as well.”

Gordon is a bit of a music lover in general, and he’s very much been won over by Kenny’s tunes.

“I love all sorts of music, I have a weird taste in it though. The only thing the guys on Super Scoreboard will tell you is when I sing the songs I never sing the right words, I make up my own.

“It’s a standing joke, they’ve actually outed me on Radio Clyde. Everyone in the office looks and goes ‘he’s singing words to a different song’.

“I like my music, I like getting my tunes on. I like the upbeat stuff going into work, it gets me ready for my shift. Even when I’m in the house myself I’ll stick it on and away I go.”

Frank is more of a rock man, but also found himself loving a bit of Giving It Travolta.

He said: “I’m a big rocker, I love rock. I love Springsteen, The Stones, I like all of them. I was a big fan of Fleetwood Mac and all that as well.

“I like genuine music and that’s why I liked this song. Any good song you can come and sing, you can’t stop moving when you hear it, it’s good.

“Travolta is really a good song. I think people will like it because it is really catchy, it catches you instantly it’s one of them you can take to. People will get up and dance to it, hopefully a lot better than me.”

And the pair both enjoyed the shoot and playing up to the cameras in their very different roles.

Frank said: “I was the Mr Travolta, I wasn’t John Travolta I was the fat Travolta. I’ve still got the moves, it was good fun. I had no acting to be honest with you. But it was good fun that I didn’t have to act, it’s the same as me in real life so there you go.

“It was hilarious, I thought it was good. Right at the start me and Gordon Dalziel were trying to get me into that white suit was fun. It was really good, I certainly didn’t slide into it.

“Yeah I love doing all that. There’s nobody that takes the mick out of themselves any more than what I do. When I got asked to do it with my pal John McLaughlin it was a no brainer. I love all of that it was good fun. To meet all the guys was brilliant.”

And Gordon admitted his role on the vid was the closest he has come to reliving the buzz of scoring in front of a packed crowd: “It was something that was outside my comfort zone.

When I got approached about it I was a bit like I don’t know, I had been asked to do a couple of other things like TV sort of comedy and I didn’t do that.

“I thought maybe this isn’t me but I just decided I may as well go and try it and see how I feel about it but I’ve got to say, I really enjoyed it, I loved it, every minute of it.

“I missed the buzz of playing football and always scoring goals in front of big crowds. When I walked away from that video shoot that night it was like going back to that buzz that you’ve done something, really enjoyed it and achieved something so I would probably look at doing more acting, yeah.

“I was basically a DJ. I don’t know who I was trying to base it on because let me tell you I think any DJ looking at that will be really secure in the knowledge of their jobs and safe, it’s never going to be in the line for me.

“I just remembered the DJ’s from years ago and all I did was have a bit of fun with it, that’s it. I’ve got to say I think what made it for me was the guys that were there.

“All the guys were brilliant, you go along to these things and you’re thinking I don’t want to make a fool of myself, this isn’t my sort of scene - but I felt very comfortable and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much.

“Kenny and the band, John, everyone – amazing people.”

Kenny will stage a special show at iconic music institution McChuills in Glasgow on Saturday May 27, when he and his band will play, along with a host of his pals – including Johnny Mac and Kevin McGuire and potentially even a Bay City Roller.

All income from gig ticket sales will go to Homeless Project Scotland.

And a certain couple of ex-footballers are hoping to make it down for the show too.

Kenny's album No Talc On The Dancefloor is out now.
