Oklahoma City Thunder Poised For Success With 2024 NBA Draft

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder have emerged as a formidable force in the NBA, sitting at the top of the Western Conference standings with a record of 43-19. This success is a result of an expedited rebuild orchestrated by Thunder GM Sam Presti, setting the franchise up for both immediate and long-term success.

During the rebuild, the Thunder accumulated a significant amount of draft capital, providing them with the flexibility to add talent through trades or continue drafting young players to bolster their roster.

Looking ahead to the 2024 NBA Draft, the Thunder had initially controlled four first-round picks. However, through strategic trades, they have positioned themselves to potentially make two first-round selections in the upcoming draft.

One of these picks is from the Houston Rockets, acquired in a trade involving Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul. The pick is top-four protected, with a 20.5% chance of falling within that range. The second pick, obtained from the Utah Jazz in exchange for taking on Derrick Favors' contract, is projected to be in the top 10.

If the Utah pick does not convey this summer, the Thunder will retain the rights to the selection for future drafts. This unique situation places Oklahoma City in a strong position to make a deep playoff run this season while also having the opportunity to secure two lottery picks in the 2024 NBA Draft.

As the Thunder aim to compete at a high level now and in the years to come, their strategic approach to roster building and asset accumulation has put them in a favorable position within the league.
