Owners of OJ Simpson’s famous Ford Bronco have suggested they may sell the vehicle amid renewed interest in the late football player.
Just months before the 30th anniversary of the disgraced star’s police chase, the vehicle's three owners have expressed intentions of listing the vehicle for sale.
Simpson died last week at the age of 76, sparking renewed discussion about the former NFL player’s controversial history.
Speaking about the infamous vehicle to Cllct, Simpson’s former agent said they had always planned to sell the car at some point.
“Before OJ passed, we had always thought this was going to be the year we were going to sell because it’s the 30th anniversary,” Gilbert told the outlet. “Who knows if we are all going to be around for the 35th or the 40th?”
Around 100 million people tuned in to watch a slow-speed police chase in 1995, as OJ Simpson travelled in the white Ford Bronco to his Brentwood mansion.
Days earlier, Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were found stabbed to death outside her home.
After failing to turn himself in as agreed in connection to the killings, police embarked on a slow-speed chase as the SUV leisurely drove along the interstate.
The chase captured the world’s attention, not only because of the high-profile murder but also because it was aired live as up to 20 police cars followed the football player to his home.
Simpson eventually turned himself in and was acquitted of the double murder in October 1995, in what has become one of the most controversial cases of the 90s.
Many people believe that the disgraced star got away with murder, and he was later found liable for their deaths in a civil suit.
The case would haunt him for the rest of his life, and he faced considerable legal and financial challenges following the double murder.
On October 3, 2008, exactly 13 years after his acquittal, Simpson was jailed for 33 years in an armed robbery and kidnapping case. He served nine years of his sentence before being released.
News of his death from prostate cancer in 2024 has revived some interest in artefacts linked to Simpson.
The white 1993 Ford Bronco is currently on loan to the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where it has been displayed since 2016.
Other cars on display in the gallery alongside the Bronco include serial killer Ted Bundy’s Volkswagen Beetle, and gangster John Dillinger’s 1933 Essex-Terraplane.
A representative of the museum said they planned to create an exhibit this year to commemorate the deaths of Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend.
"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the deaths of Ron and Nicole; we had already planned to memorialize them this summer," a spokesperson told People.
