Interventional radiologists in Japan were partway through a liver cancer treatment when the imaging screen showed something unexpected. An oily mixture meant to collect inside a tumor was instead spreading toward the hepatic hilum, the gateway where blood vessels and bile ducts enter the liver.
Follow-up scans revealed where it went. The material had entered the liver's lymphatic vessels and traveled through lymph nodes in the abdomen and chest, eventually reaching nodes above the woman's left collarbone.
