For the second consecutive year, Ohio State athletics has been recognized as a “Waste Champion,” the Green Sports Alliance. The department earned the GSA ‘Play to Zero’ Award by achieving more than a 90 percent diversion rate from landfill. If you are like me and wondered what the heck that means, we’re here to tell you.
According to a release, “the Play to Zero awards recognizes sports organizations that show, via Play to Zero or other tracking platforms, significant reductions or diversions in waste, water, and/or energy use at their venues. These awards highlight continuous improvements in building-level sustainability around waste, water, and energy use management.”
“We are honored to once again be recognized as a Waste Champion by the Green Sports Alliance,” Cecil Okotah, Ohio State’s environmental sustainability specialist, said in a statement. “Achieving the GSA Play to Zero Award reflects our commitment to diverting 90 percent or more of waste from landfills. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our operations team and collaborators.”

Ohio State was hornored last year through the 2023 GSA Summit in Seattle.
