An Ohio mother tragically lost her life while trying to protect her child from a car theft incident in Columbus. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when 29-year-old Alexa Stakely was picking up her 6-year-old child from a babysitter's apartment.
According to the police report, Stakely had briefly stepped back inside the apartment to retrieve an item when she noticed someone attempting to steal her Honda SUV with her sleeping child still inside. In a heroic attempt to save her child, Stakely ran after the stolen vehicle and was struck by it, resulting in fatal injuries.
Despite her efforts, Stakely succumbed to her injuries at a hospital several hours later. Fortunately, her son was found unharmed in the abandoned car nearby.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case, as investigations are ongoing. Stakely, who worked as a speech language pathologist at Winchester Trail Elementary and also held a second job as a waitress to support her child, was described as a dedicated mother by her employer, Canal Winchester Schools.
The school district, where Stakely had been employed for five years, paid tribute to her on social media, highlighting her commitment to her son and the positive impact she had on the students and families she worked with.
