An 81-year-old Ohio man has been charged with murder after shooting a female Uber driver outside his South Charleston home. The incident occurred on March 25, resulting in the death of the 61-year-old Uber driver, Loletha Hall.
According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, William Brock mistakenly believed that Hall was working with a scammer who had been threatening him over the phone. The scammer claimed that one of Brock’s relatives was in jail and demanded money for their release. When Hall arrived at Brock’s residence in response to a request on the Uber app, Brock shot her multiple times.
Authorities revealed that Hall had no connection to the scam caller and posed no threat to Brock during the encounter. Despite this, Brock failed to contact authorities for assistance after the shooting.
Brock pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and posted a $200,000 bond. Uber has been in contact with Hall’s family and law enforcement, expressing condolences for the tragic incident. The company has also banned the account of the individual who ordered Hall’s Uber to Brock’s house, suspecting them to be either the scam caller or an accomplice.
Uber emphasized its commitment to driver safety and highlighted safety features within the app, including an emergency button, route sharing capabilities, and access to live safety agents. The company continues to cooperate with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are yet to identify the owner of the account that ordered Hall’s Uber or make any additional arrests in connection to the case. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
