Oh Hyeon gyu hits Celtic transfer roadblock as Suwon get tough over 'indispensable' talisman

Oh Hyeon-gyu is set to see a dream move to Celtic blocked by the Suwan powerbrokers with the club unwilling to rubber stamp a January move.

The Hoops appear to have taken an interest in the South Korean market with the club's winter business already well underway. With the long-term future of Giorgos Giakoumakis in doubt a new striker appears to be top of the agenda with Cho Gue-sung and Hyeon-gyu both on Ange Postecoglou's radar. Hyeon-gyu has previously claimed that he was keen on a move to the Scottish Premiership, but has thrown down the gauntlet to Suwon by stating his desire to leave the K-League club publicly.

The 21-year-old has told Joongang Daily when asked about interest from Glasgow's east end: "Celtic, a prestigious club, gave me a good offer. I want to take this opportunity to challenge myself. I have told the club I want to go and I am waiting for the team’s position."

However, Suwon are ready to play transfer hardball and have made it clear they are unwilling to budge over a deal. A club statement released to SpoTV claims the frontman will not be allowed to leave despite reports that Celtic had table a £1.7m offer.

It read: “The club’s position is clear. Oh has four years left on his contract and is an indispensable player."

Hyeon-gyu netted 14 goals in the K-League last season, earning him a call-up to South Korea's World Cup squad. However, he was the 27th player brought with the nation and would have been called in for any injured player but who was ultimately not needed.
