Obsidian walks back The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice free upgrade due to platform limitations

Obsidian Entertainment has changed part of its upgrade plan for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, with PS4 and Xbox One digital owners now needing the base game and both DLCs to receive the newer version at no additional cost.

The change affects players who own only the base version of The Outer Worlds on PS4 or Xbox One. Obsidian previously said players with at least the base edition in their library before May 27 would receive The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition for free on supported platforms, but now the platform list has shrunk to Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.

Obsidian Support has now clarified that PS4 and Xbox One digital owners are handled differently because of “platform limitations.” In a reply to a player asking why the requirement changed, the support account said, “Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade.”

That means PS4 and Xbox One players need The Outer Worlds, Peril on Gorgon, and Murder on Eridanos in their digital library to qualify. Players who only own the base game on those platforms will not receive the Spacer’s Choice upgrade under the revised requirement.

The base game and DLCs will be removed from most storefronts on May 27, 2026, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC App, Windows Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG versions. PS4 and Xbox One are not receiving the free update, but their versions are also not being delisted.

Game Pass players on Xbox Series X|S will also be moved to The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. Players who already own Spacer’s Choice will still be able to download the original version, though it may need to be searched manually through the store if it is not automatically visible in the library.

Players are understandably angry at this change and are publicly calling Obsidian out. The company has yet to acknowledge these complaints.
