A Jet2 passenger allegedly struck a member of cabin crew during the violent onboard outburst when her demand for free champagne was refused. Witnesses claimed she urinated on seats and lashed out at other holidaymakers on board the flight from Manchester to Rhodes.
The pilot of the holiday jet was eventually forced to made an emergency landing at Munich airport in Germany so the disruptive passenger could be offloaded and the plane could continue to its Greek island destination. The shocking incident occurred on August 25.
The incident began when the passenger - sitting hear the front of the plane - insisted on receiving free champagne. This was refused so she ordered a gin and tonic which cabin crew eventually confiscated as she continued to be aggressive.
Another traveller said at one point, the woman tried to open the cabin door mid-flight and two male passengers were forced to hold her down when she tried to punch other people, the Mirror reported. The woman ignored pleas to calm down and continued to fight efforts to restrain her.
The aircraft eventually landed at Munich, where police officers boarded and removed the irate passenger who by this time, according to other travellers, had become distressed.
The witness said: "She urinated over three seats and repeatedly had bursts of violent episodes until we had to make an emergency landing in Munich. She was escorted off the plane by around nine police officers along with an ambulance and fire services.
"We were in Germany for over two hours. Jet2 handled this situation really well and the captain of the plane gave everyone complimentary drinks."
A spokesperson for the airline said: "We can confirm that flight LS819 from Manchester to Rhodes was diverted to Munich Airport yesterday so that a disruptive passenger could be offloaded. We would like to apologise to customers for this unforeseen delay and any inconvenience caused.
"The health and safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority and, as a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour. We will not hesitate to vigorously pursue any costs incurred as a result of this diversion."
