Illness knocks out two Irish crews in Munich but six more will go for Euro medals over the weekend

Two European Championship medal hopes had to pull out due to an illness to Sanita Puspure but Ireland will still have six boats in A finals in Munich over the weekend.

The Women's double sculls team comprising of former world champion Puspure and Zoe Hyde reached the semi-finals on Thursday, when they finished second in their heat.

However they were unable to compete on Friday morning in the semis, just two months on from winning silver in the World Cup II event in Poznan.

Their withdrawal has had a knock-on effect, as Puspure and Hyde were also involved in the Women's Eight crew that was due to take part in a repechage on Friday morning after finishing second in their heat.

There was better news for the Irish rowers later in the morning, however, and four women's crews will compete for medals in A finals on Saturday morning.

Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty, who won Olympic bronze in the women's fours boat in Tokyo, are into the women's pair A final after beating Greece to first place in the first repechage heat.

Aoife Casey also won the opening heart of lightweight women's single sculls repechage to make the final.

And the lightweight women’s double sculls team of Lydia Heaphy and Margaret Cremen just edged out Switzerland by 0.03 of a second to reach the final.

It was business as usual for Tokyo golden duo Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy on Thursday as they qualified for the the men’s lightweight double sculls final.

The Cork pair hadn't rowed competitively together since winning the Henley Regatta close to a year ago, a victory that came on the back of their Tokyo triumph, but won their heat by almost six seconds.

The final is on Sunday and the duo are hot favourites to add European gold to their collection.

The women's fours crew - including two of those who claimed bronze in Tokyo, Eimear Lambe and Aifric Keogh - were also comfortable winners of their heat.

The pair, along with Tara Hanlon and Natalie Long, were seven seconds faster than the Danes in second place and will also compete in Saturday's A final.

In the para mixed double sculls, Katie O’Brien and Steven McGowan are into the A final on Sunday after finishing fourth in their heat.
