A city-centre bakery specialising in New York-inspired giant cookies, doughnuts and sweet bakes is launching its very own bakery and cafe at the former Manchester Cat Cafe site in the Northern Quarter. Gooey's neighbourhood bakery and cafe will open this weekend, and will boast an in-house bakery, takeout coffee ordering and a counter full of pastries, cookies and more.
Tucked off High Street, its new site overlooking the square, will bring a West Coast vibe and Northern Quarter charm. A sneak peak at the interiors suggests a breezy and casual affair, allowing the bakes and sweet treats to take centre stage.
The bakery has gained a 'cult-like' following since it set up shop doing delivery during lockdown and later a kiosk at the entrance of Ducie Street Warehouse. In May 2021 it expanded its reach by setting up a site at the popular food and drink neighbourhood Hatch, with a unit facing Oxford Road - ideal for appealing to hungry passers by.

Ranging from classic doughnut fillings like raspberry jam and vanilla custard, to cookies such as double chocolate with a gooey, soft centre, their bakes often have people queuing down the street. Keeping customers on their toes, seasonal specials have previously included hot cross bun-inspired cookies, and the 'kinderella' donut, which tastes like Kinder Bueno.
Branching out from its cookies and doughnuts, diners can expect some imaginative brunch items, from bacon butties in Shokupan bread and whipped avocado on toast, to Gooey French toast. The latter is stuffed with dulce de leche and maple syrup, topped with French salted butter - guaranteed to become on of their most popular plates.
Brunch sides, meanwhile, will include some seriously pimped up hash browns - a stack of three house-made crispy squares made with Koffman's potatoes. There's also the chance to upgrade your breakfast with halloumi served with chilli jam.
Most importantly though, Gooey's new venture will offer their largest bakery selection yet. Introducing croissants, cruffins and pastries alongside their insta-famous warm, gooey cookies and sugar coated stuffed brioche donuts, diners can expect classics and crowd-pleasers, freshly baked every day.
Those looking for a caffeine fix can also pop in for a Dead Good coffee or the best brew in town, with Gooey serving no-frills Yorkshire Tea. Their new home also boasts an open bakery where customers will get a front row seat to the baking action.
The kitchen will become the HQ of all things Gooey - from the proofing to the filling, the rolling to the decorating, the bakery will be a treat for all the senses as the scents from the bakery fill the space.
For loyal Gooey fans who just want something on the go, they can either visit the new space on High Street or swing by the bakery's other site at Ducie Street Warehouse, which will remain open Wednesday through Sunday for the usual Gooey cookies, doughnuts and buns.
