Nutella taste-tested against supermarket chocolate spread and it didn't live up to hype

It may be one of the best-loved chocolate spreads on the planet, but it looks like Nutella has some tough competition from a couple of supermarkets.

The chocolate hazelnut spread has been a fan favourite for years - particularly as a topping for pancakes - as it goes with pretty much everything.

But, it looks like the iconic brand has lost its crown after a blind taste test found that a couple of cheaper alternatives from your local supermarket are tastier.

A blind taste test found that two supermarkets are offering cheaper and tastier alternatives (Which?)

Whether you are a Nutella fanatic or not, consumer champion Which? tested a range of own-branded chocolate spreads from eight supermarkets against the mighty original and found two new champions.

The taste test saw a panel of consumers try out a range of chocolatey heaven and found that Waitrose and Lidl both came out on top.

The tasters were asked to rate the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each one and they found that the two supermarket's were neck and neck with each other for the crown.

Waitrose came in first place with their Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (Waitrose)

It comes after the Morrisons and Aldi managed to dethrone Marmite as the best yeast extract spread.

Waitrose's Essential Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (£1.70 for 400g) came in first place 83 per cent, and was followed closely by Lidl's Choco Nussa Spread (£1.09 for 400g) with 81 per cent.

In contract, Nutella came in fourth with a score of 77 per cent.

Lidl followed closely in second place with their Choc Nussa Spread (Lidl)

Fans of the popular chocolate spread will be happy to hear that both supermarket's own-branded versions are much cheaper than the original Nutella, which is retailed at £2.90 for a 350g jar.

The results means that families can keep the costs lower this pancake day amidst the rising cost of living if they choose to switch to one of the own-branded jars.

Another supermarket also managed to impress the panels, with Tesco's Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (£1.50 for 400g) also beaten the original with 78 per cent.

Nutella only managed to come in fourth place, as Tesco also ranked above it in the taste test (Reuters)

In a surprising turn of events, popular supermarket Aldi was not able to impress with their own version this time round, despite being a regular favourite among shoppers.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: "Once again, our taste tests have proven that supermarket own branded products can more than hold their own against the bigger, well known brands, delivering great quality and good value for money.

"With the ongoing cost of living crisis and food price inflation, shoppers may be looking to save money on their grocery shop. You can easily save money by switching to supermarket's own-label products, and get a tastier topping in the process."

How other chocolate spreads ranked

  • Morrisons Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – 74%.
  • Sainsbury's Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – 73%.
  • M&S Smooth Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – 73%.
