Nutella compared to Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl own brands

Yummm, Nutella! Just the thought of the very popular nut-chocolate spread is enough to make some people drool.

The red, black and white logo, which has been around since 1964, is recognised globally.

Now many supermarkets, including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, and Lidl have created their own brand version of the delicious spread-some even creating multiple versions at different prices.

We have put these supermarket dupes to the test to see if any can rival the famous Nutella taste and save you some pennies.

Nutella (price varies)

Can anything beat the real Nutella? (Steph Colderick)

First up is Nutella itself, to compare to the supermarket variations. You can buy Nutella from most supermarkets with the spread ranging in prices - it is currently £3.20 at Tesco but £2.50 with a Clubcard.

As expected the Nutella tasted delicious, rich with deep equal part chocolate and nutty flavour, and glided out of the tub and onto the knife very easily.

The only drawbacks were that the seal of the tub was tricky to peel off and the Nutella spread much easier when it had melted on the toast slightly.

Aldi, Nutocka (£1.09)

Nutocka was sweeter than normal Nutella (Steph Colderick)

Next is the Aldi version of Nutella, called Nutocka, and uses very similar red, white and black branding to Nutella making it a classic Aldi dupe.

Like Nutella, Nutocka was easy to carve the knife into and spread across the toast. The taste was much sweeter and much more chocolately than Nutella, but not too dissimilar.

I would recommend this as a good and cheaper Nutella alternative.

Tesco, Hazlenut Chocolate Spread (£1.60)

Tesco's was the most expensive dupe (Steph Colderick)

A little more expensive than Aldi's Tesco's Hazelnut Chocolate Spread which was tasty and also spread well on the toast.

The spread was darker in colour, the darkest shade of brown of all the dupes, and was also sweeter and not as rich as the original Nutella but still perfectly enjoyable.

Lidl, Choco Nussa (£1.09)

Choco Nussa tasted nuttier than any other fake Nutellas (Steph Colderick)

As the sister company to Aldi, Lidl's version of Nutella was also priced at £1.09 and was one of the easiest seals to peel back.

The consistency of the spread was a lot runnier than Nutella however this meant it spread well. The taste was definitely nuttier than the other dupes and I would recommend Choco Nussa.

Morrisons, Savers Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (80p)

Morrisons have a saver version of their Nutella (Steph Colderick)

Both Morrisons and Asda offer a cheaper and regular priced version of Nutella so we gave both a try, starting with the Morrisons Saver option.

The tub looked and felt the cheapest and the consistency of the spread is much gloopier and runnier.

Spreading well, it had less flavour than the other dupes but the flavour that was there was nuttier and less chocolatey but for 80p you can't go wrong.

Morrisons, Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (£1.50)

The Morrisons dupe did not spread well (Steph Colderick)

The regular Morrisons copy of Nutella was in a similar tub to the store's cheaper offering but the seal was easy to peel back.

This was the most solid spread of the fake Nutellas and took some digging into with the knife and once you did get some, it didn't glide over the toast.

The overall taste was heavily chocolate-based and although still good, the cheaper Lidl and Aldi versions are better.

Asda, Smartprice Hazlenut Chocolate Spread (99p)

The Asda Smartprice spread was just under £1 (Steph Colderick)

The cheaper Smartprice Asda option is available for just under a pound and it was tricky to peel off the seal.

This spread was also rather solid, some more digging of the knife was required, however, it did spread across the toast well and there was a nice strong nutty after-taste.

Asda, Hazelnut Chocolate Spread (£1.30)

This fake Nutella spread well on toast (Steph Colderick)

The regular Asda attempt at Nutella spread well, however, it was much sweeter than Nutella making it feel like cheaper chocolate was used in the recipe.

The overall taste was still very nice and I would use it to spruce up my slice of morning toast.

Overall verdict

Overall Nutella has got the better taste and you can see what you are paying the extra money for as it has a deeper, richer flavour and melts in your mouth.

However, there was nothing wrong with any of the dupes and while some were better than others, all are tasty and edible.

If you are not fussy about your nutty chocolate spread and just want something to give you that chocolate kick I would recommend all the dupes and save yourself some money...
