Nurse hospitalised with flu undergoes heart surgery and is in coma

A nurse who caught the flu a fortnight ago has been put into a coma and undergone open-heart surgery. Kate Thomas had a cold and a cough but her symptoms eased after a week, according to her mum, Alison Thomas.

However, the 33-year-old's symptoms worsened again last week and she was taken to hospital. Once in Arrowe Park Hospital Kate, who is from Aigburth in Liverpool, was swiftly moved to intensive care, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Alder Hey nurse underwent a heart scan which revealed that the flu had attacked her heart. Kate was put into a coma and transferred to heart specialists at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.
