'Nuisance' roadworks ‘constantly’ happening in Nottinghamshire village

Residents in a Nottinghamshire village have spoken out about ‘nuisance’ roadworks in the village they feel are ‘constantly’ happening in their area.

Neighbours in Radcliffe-on-Trent say roadworks in the village cause a huge traffic build up for motorists. It comes after roadworks caused huge delays on the A52 Grantham Road in both directions on May 3.

Temporary traffic lights were in place due to a fault on the underground electricity cable. 62-year-old John Mystry, owner of Mace convenience store, spoke about the recent temporary traffic lights.

He said: “It’s a nuisance but it's a necessity, It has to be done. Its electricity affected quite a number of houses on this road. These things happen, the works have got to be done. It’s a bit of a nuisance. It’s a busy trunk road through Radcliffe. At the end of the day it is what it is.”

Ty Burridge-Oakland, 41, a managing director, was away from home when the fault on the underground electricity cable took place. He came home to see workers digging by his home.

He said: “The power went off for half an hour, the street lights were flickering on and off. I think it [the temporary traffic lights] slowed down the buses and had an impact on the bus route.

“It makes it easier to get out,” he joked about getting out his drive. Last year junction upgrades took place at the Bingham Road Junction, Ty added: “That’s been an ongoing saga for what feels like over a year. I’m not sure if it’s improved the traffic.”

In 2022 a project by National Highways took place to improve junctions in Nottinghamshire and works took place at the Bingham Road Junction.

They widened the approaches to the junction and installed traffic lights. However, before work could start at the junction, essential gas works first had to be completed - which started in summer 2021. So frustrated residents have had nearly 12 months of roadworks to contend with.

Carer Michelle Green, 43, said the roadworks feel constant. She said: “The Main Road isn’t too bad, it’s the A52 that can get quite built up. It’s a main route in and out of Nottingham and obviously traffic builds up pretty easily.

“We do get a lot of roadworks but it’s got to be done. We had a lot of works last year and they have been doing the roundabout at Gamston for a while as well. It is annoying, It has caused a huge amount of traffic at times.

“It feels like it’s constant sometimes, it’s one thing after another.”

In February 2021, residents were left frustrated after a four week programme took place to carry out repairs to the A52 between Lees Barn Road and Golf Road. At the time, residents feared people would use the village as a cut through.

Another resident who wished to remain anonymous said: “Unfortunately being a main road we do get hit with a lot of road works.

"There were some traffic lights a week or so ago and it was busy queuing for a long while. This stretch of road can get built up. It can be terrible sometimes, especially when everyone is travelling to work or going home.”
