This Morning star Alison Hammond celebrated the show winning Best Daytime at the National Television Awards last night, as she got back to presenting duties on Friday.

But Hammond missed out on the Best Presenter gong, losing to reigning champions Ant and Dec.

The 47-year-old initially thought she had beaten the Geordie duo, as she confessed on Friday’s This Morning that she had misheard her name being called for the award.

Appearing on the ITV show with Dermot O’Leary, Hammond explained to viewers that she had to check whether or not she had heard correctly with her co-host.

“Obviously I was up for an award but in my head I heard ‘Alison’ when they called out Ant and Dec,” Hammond said.

Hammond discussed the mishap on This Morning with co-host Dermot O’Leary (ITV/This Morning)

“So then I reached across to Dermot and said, ‘Did they say Alison?’ and Dermot went, ‘No. They didn’t say Alison.’ I was so shameful. It’s so embarrassing!”

She added: “I wasn’t joking. But what a great night! We are truly, truly, the whole team, they all work incredibly hard. We are so grateful for this award.”

The moment was caught on camera as Hammond was seen quizzing O’Leary, 49, from their seats at the NTA following the winners’ announcement.

Ant and Dec weren’t present at the ceremony, due to contracting Covid-19, and so presenter Stephen Mulhern collected their 21st consecutive award on their behalf.

As he made his way to the stage, Hammond and O’Leary were seen in the clip in fits of laughter following the misunderstanding from the Big Brother star.

Fans were left wishing Hammond had won instead and vented their frustrations on Twitter.

One person wrote: “I love Ant and Dec, I really do, but it should of been Alison this year…them winning every year is getting beyond boring.”

Another added: “Why are people acting like Ant and Dec are the only presenters in the entire UK that are worthy of winning the award every year.

“They are NOT. Alison has interviewed some of the most famous people and they have all loved her. Why can’t she win for once!”

Hammond did get to collect an NTA for This Morning, though, and led the cast onstage in giving thanks for the show’s win.
