The number of coronavirus patients in Northern Territory hospitals has grown to 54, up from 48 patients yesterday.

Twelve patients are requiring oxygen and two patients are in the intensive care unit.

In a statement, NT Health reported 231 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday, of which 197 were detected using a rapid antigen test (RAT).

Today's daily total marks a significant drop from yesterday's 386 new cases, continuing a downward trend seen across the NT in recent weeks.

It is the lowest daily total since January 23.

There were 136 cases recorded in the Top End region, 42 in Central Australia, 10 in East Arnhem, 21 in the Big Rivers region, and eight in the Barkly region. Fourteen are under investigation.

The NT's COVID-19 death toll stands at 28, following the death of a man in his 50s being reported yesterday.

The number of active cases in the NT is 3,322, according to NT government figures.
