NT Police investigating fatal tour bus crash in Central Australia, passengers remain in hospital

Northern Territory emergency services attended the crash site on Monday night.

A 67-year-old woman is in intensive care following a tour bus rollover in Central Australia on Monday afternoon which killed a 69-year-old man.

Northern Territory police are investigating what caused the crash, which took place at about 3:30pm on Larapinta Drive near Hermannsburg, just over one hour west of Alice Springs.

"The tour bus, carrying 19 passengers from interstate, was travelling inbound east of Hermannsburg when it left the roadway and rolled several times before coming to a stop on the side of the road," police said in a statement.

The 69-year-old man died at the scene and five other patients were taken to Alice Springs Hospital for further treatment.

Three women — aged 62, 67 and 70 — were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Two men — a 60-year-old man who sustained serious injuries and a 68-year-old with minor injuries — were also transported to hospital.

Police said the driver and remaining passengers received lacerations and bruising, and were taken to Alice Springs after the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher said it did not appear that any other vehicles were involved but the cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

"The major crash team have been out there all night and certainly were still working on the scene this morning," he said.

"It takes a while to analyse the evidence that they've got, they've still got a number of enquiries to do."

He said police believed the bus was returning to Alice Springs after a day tour when the crash happened.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. (ABC News: Samantha Jonscher)
