Northern Territory emergency services have recovered a body during their search for a 50-year-old man whom they believe drowned near Tennant Creek on Sunday afternoon.

The NT Police, Fire and Rescue Service and Emergency Service said witnesses had told police the man had been swimming in floodwaters when he was swept away around 3:45pm.

In a statement released Sunday evening, police said the man was last seen near Seven Mile bridge, north of Tennant Creek.

A statement issued on Monday morning said police had conducted a land search on foot and using motorbikes until last light on Sunday.

They found a body, which they believe to be the missing 50-year-old man, some distance down the river this morning.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Watch Commander Andrew Heath said the Northern Territory was currently experiencing widespread heavy rainfall and urged people to be careful.

"Incidents like these are a reminder to everyone to avoid flooded waterways," he said.

"Flash flooding creates fast flows and brings significant debris, which adds further risk to anyone trying to swim or cross waterways or flooded roads."
